Walking to Fitness and Health

It is summer and a perfect season to go out for a walk. Although there is increasing evidence that taking a walk brings many health benefits, many of us need a little nudge to get out. I recently ran across an article that highlighted a few incentives to get out and walk, and I thought I would share them with you.

"The family-time walk:" Engaging with your family in an outdoor walk is a great way to get exercise and strengthen connections. Studies found that a 20-minute walk can restore your attention and calm your brain. After a frazzling day, a walk with your family, or your best friend like Michelle's dog Barley, is a good way to unwind.

"The tree hugger's walk:" Researchers have compared the experience of walking in an urban setting with walking in nature, and those that walked in the forest had improved heart and lung functions. The more green around us when we walk, the less stress we feel at the end.

"The memory-booster walk:" After following 300 older adults after 13 years, researchers found that those who walked between six to nine miles a week had lowered their memory issues by 50 percent! Now that is an incentive to get out and walk.

"The philosopher's walk:" Walking is not only good for creative thinking, it also provides other brain benefits. Researchers found that adults who walked for 40 minutes three times a week were able to improve their performance on tasks. Other studies have shown that by learning new skills, such as photography, we can keep our minds sharp. I enjoy taking images while walking, as well as processing them when I am back home. It increases my creative skills, and keeps challenging me to learn and grow.

"The socializer's walk:" People who join walking groups or walked with friends had lowered blood pressure and had more efficient weight loss. I generally prefer walking by myself, but I do enjoy outings with friends. It is good to know that there are even more benefits walking with someone else.

All of these type of walks can become Camera Walking experiences by bringing your smartphone or camera with you. Research shows that when people take images they enjoy the experience more. Another great reason to take your camera with you.

Take advantage of this summer season by getting out for a walk. Bring your camera with you so that you can achieve better health, fitness, and creativity. I love to hear from you, so comment below, post on our Facebook page, or send an email.
