A Great Start to Summer

Tomorrow is Memorial Day in the U.S., a federal holiday to remember those who lost their lives fighting for our country. This weekend is also considered to be the start of summer, although it doesn't actually begin until June 20th. Many people leave town to celebrate this three-day holiday, while others throng to festivals all over the country, such as our local Northwest Folklife Festival held at the Seattle Center. I decided to explore the festival with my camera and wasn't disappointed.

After five months of record-breaking rain, we were blessed with good weather. Actually it was very hot getting into the mid '80's. The heat didn't seem to bother the crowds listening (and dancing) to the band. One thing that is great about this festival is that in addition to scheduled musicians and dancers, people just find a place along the walk ways to perform.

The one that I loved the most though was this little girl who was just kneeling by the path playing and singing. She, in my mind, was earning all of her tips, including the one I gave her.

There is everything that you can imagine available to entertain, such as this balloon man and woman, who I thought looked a bit like a princess.

I smiled when I passed this young woman. She had a typewriter on a small table and was ready to create. She was more professional about her approach than the guy I passed who would tell you a joke for twenty-five cents.

As I walked around the Seattle Center I found a place set aside for a community singing. Everyone is free to join. They were actually quite good for volunteers.

Next to the singers I spotted an exhibition of quilts. The one that drew me in is called "Vamp." Pretty impressive.

The International Fountain is in the heart of the Seattle Center, and it was put to good use. Kids of all ages love running through the water, or trying to not get wet.

I wondered whether this woman brought her umbrella to protect her from the sun or the fountain streams. Perhaps both.

Although this wasn't the best time of day to take photos, I enjoyed capturing some of special festival fun. In addition to remembering those who lost their lives on Memorial Day, I hope you find time this weekend to get out Camera Walking. We love to hear from you so comment below, post on our Facebook page, or send us an email.
