Reduce Your Election Stress
As the entire world knows, Tuesday, November 8th is election day in the U.S. This year has been very challenging not only for Americans, but for people around the world wondering who will become our next President. Many therapists report that they have seen more clients reporting stress as a result of this election season. In fact, according to an American Psychological Association survey, one in four younger American workers are feeling stressed and less productive when talking about the election at work. So what to do? Vote. It is our right and responsibility as citizens, and casting a vote is a concrete step that helps to reduce stress.

There are other things that you can do to positively reduce your stress over the next few days and weeks ahead.
Exercise: We all know that exercise reduces both psychological and physical stress, so go out for a walk. Invite your friends or family to join in and appreciate the beauty around you. If you are walking with children, play a game looking for a color, a type of plant, or a special shape. Everyone is engaged and not thinking of what is happening in the news.

Mindfulness: For some, meditating can achieve mindfulness and reduce stress. It is about focusing on the moment. When I go out Camera Walking by myself I find it very meditative. I am moving and looking for opportunities to capture an interesting photo. My brain is focused and not worrying. I am always refreshed mentally and physically when I return.

Creativity: Invest in a creative exercise, such as taking photos, trying out a new lens, or processing your photos to create more artistic images. I personally find the time I spend creating a beautiful, artistic image very relaxing and it boosts my self value.

Learn: Watch an online course on any subject that strikes your fancy. YouTube has a wealth of videos, as well as online companies such as KelbyOne, Lynda.com, and others. I love immersing myself in a tutorial on how to make a book on Blurb, or one that I recently watched on how to find your artistic voice. I am learning and my mind is focused.
Reach out: Regardless of what action you take to reduce stress, the most important thing is to take care of yourself. A great way to reduce your anxiety is to do something nice for you and someone else. Our self value increases when we help others. Volunteer or take a gift of your photos to someone to let them know you care.

Finally, after voting go out for a cupcake. It is a treat worth waiting for!
