A Fun Walking Destination!
It is always fun to find somewhere new to walk! I sometimes feel so challenged to get out for my daily Camera Walk... So, I try to think of some places I have not visited for a long time and get excited to explore.
Titlow Beach is a great spot in Tacoma that has a very long history of being a special spot to spend a hot summer day cooling off. I visited the area last week and really enjoyed taking photos of all the fun activity going on around me! It is also a wonderful spot to see the amazing Tacoma Narrows Bridge...a bridge with an incredible history!
The park is along the shores of the Tacoma Narrows and is designated the Titlow Beach Marine Preserve Area. When the tide is low, there are many leftover pilings from an old ferry dock that are fascinating to explore for interesting sea life.
You can really enjoy an exploration walk along the beach, giving you lots of great photo opportunities.
There are two great days (July 5 and August 1), during the summer low tides, that the Metropolitan Park District hosts a “tide pools” interpretive display. It is particularly fun for young children and very hands on! Either of these days would be great to take your family on that exploration Camera Walk...
This area of the Tacoma Narrows is home to giant octopus … check out this super video I found! This is a very popular site for divers to explore the underwater sea life. In case you decide to take up diving, here is some fascinating information of what this area has to offer!
You can learn a great deal about this area and the marine habitat by going to: The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.
This shot from Google Earth will give you a very good perspective of this entire area along the Tacoma Narrows.
The mainline railroad tracks divide the park and the beach, so you may find yourself on the wrong side of the tracks waiting for a very long train. If you are ready for a bite to eat and wishing for a cold beverage, there are two popular spots for refreshments: The Beach at Titlow and Steamer's Seafood.
You can continue your walk along the quiet local street, appropriately named Seashore Drive, that joins Titlow Beach and the Narrows Marina.
Narrows Marina has been in Tacoma for over 65 years and has always been a vibrant connection point for boaters to head out fishing or begin their cruising adventures “into the South Sound” or “up the Narrows”.
The marina area has another great dockside restaurant, the Boathouse 19 Bar and Grill. It is a perfect spot to stop for lunch or dinner, before you make your way back to your car at Titlow. Also there is always lots of boating activity, a great dock to walk, and some fun treasures to explore as you wander around this area.
CameraWalking is such a great way to keep on exploring new spots! We have so many wonderful treasures in the Pacific Northwest. We will keep posting places that you might not know about that have great walks. We hope you have a chance to head down to Titlow area in Tacoma to walk the park, the beach, and the community. I think you will find it delightful!
We look forward to sending you on another adventure soon! Meanwhile, don’t forget to take a daily walk…with your camera! And enjoy this wonderful summer weather!
