Snowshoes and a camera…a wonderful combination!
Winter CameraWalking can be a challenge, but it can also be very rewarding! Camera Walker Laurel Arwine found herself, on a beautiful cold winter day, ready to head out with her camera…and her snowshoes. For any of you who have not tried snow shoeing, it is a wonderful way to enjoy the beauty of winter, get some great exercise, and to take yourself places where you can take wonderful photos.
I personally have Tubbs snowshoes and I love them. They are lightweight, easy to strap on and keep me stable on the snow. I like to use poles with mine, but also like to walk without the poles sometimes, so having collapsible poles that you can stick in your backpack are perfect.
The other great things about snowshoeing is the equipment is not too expensive; it is fairly easy to become adept at the sport by all ages; and it really is a sport that will last you a life-time. REI has an excellent article about selecting snowshoes. I really suggest you read through it! REI also has a great selection of snowshoes...you should check them out!
If you are trying to get children excited about this sport, you might seriously consider getting some Tubbs Kids’ Snowglow Snowshoes. I just ordered some and am very excited to watch the kiddos move all over the snow with blinking LED lights! This should get them really into this cool sport! While snow shoes have been around forever, the modern equipment in the past 30 years has basically stayed the same, however snowshoes are made of lighter materials and are fare easier to use. You may enjoy this interesting article about the history of snowshoes.
We hope you are enjoying the lovely photos that Laurel took on a beautiful sunny day at Crystal Mountain, Washington. The area really has lots of amazing viewpoints and is a true treasure to the State of Washington! You can take the Gondola up to the top of the area and cover lots of amazing trails to get some super exercise and incredible views. The area offers Guided Saturday Snowshoeing Tour and Dinner packages. They are delightful and would give you a chance to have a very unique experience in a beautiful area. They sell out easily, so be sure and book your reservations…and don’t forget your camera!
Down in the base area, you can explore paths, fields, and roadways that allow for some good flat routes or you can take off up the sides of the ski runs. That experience will give you an incredible workout. And these chairs are just waiting for you to take a rest!
Adventures in our winter wonderland are so fantastic! There are forests, rivers, and park areas to explore. You should consider purchasing a Sno-Park pass so you can have access to the wonderful snow land we all share. The Washington Trails Association website is a great resource for winter recreation.
So, dress warmly, pack a lunch, stick your camera in your pocket, strap on your snowshoes, and head out! Be sure to follow the important safety rules of snowshoeing to assure you have a fun and safe outing. Snowshoeing with a buddy is very important, so be sure to encourage others to try this sport with you.
